Mary Judith Schmidt, nee Powell, of West Bend, died on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Froedtert Health St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 72. She was born on July 15, 1939 in Hartford to the late Leo and Georgia (nee Lochmes) Powell. The family lived on a farm in the Town of Erin.
As a child, they moved to the Town of Barton. She attended St. Mary's grade school and graduated with the Class of 1958 from West Bend High School. For a number of years, she worked as an operating room technician, first at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee and later at St. Joseph's Community Hospital in West Bend.
On October 24, 1970, she was united in marriage to Curtis Schmidt at Holy Angels Catholic Church.
For more than 30 years, Judy volunteered her time and talents to drum and bugle corps, First with the West Bend Patriots, then the Marquis of Fond du Lac, and since 1983 the Pioneer from Milwaukee. Over the years, she spent thousands of hours cooking, chaperoning, working bingo and helping out in the sewing department. For a number of years, the family also housed members from around the country and even the world, including Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Texas and Japan. The kids that stayed at the family home became part of the family, and stayed in touch long after they returned to their homes.
After her children were grown, she went back to work. For many years, she worked in the fabric department at Banner Crafts in West Bend and Grafton.
Her faith was an important part of her life. For the past few years, she participated in the Eucharistic Adoration at Holy Angels Church.
Survivors include her husband; 4 children: Amy, Scott (Julie), Jeff (Valerie), all of West Bend and Melanie (Michael) McCarthy of Sheboygan; 5 grandchildren Aidan and Owen Schmidt, Liam and Declan Schmidt and Sarah McCarthy; 2 sisters Kay (Ronald) Diels of Stoughton and Eileen (Kenneth) Hattori of Auburndale, FL and Hartford; her step-mother-in-law Catherine Schmidt of West Bend; 4 brothers-in-law Lee Schmidt of Rogers, AR, Kenneth (Joyce) Schmidt of West Bend, Robert (Jane) Schmidt of Richmond, VA and Jerome (Patricia) Vetting of Manitowoc; dear friends Roman and Sue Blenski of Milwaukee, nieces, nephews, her drum corps kids, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother Marie Powell, her parents-in-law Leander and Melanie Schmidt, one sister-in-law Mary Lee Vetting and one brother-in-law Jerome Schmidt.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Holy Angels Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and also Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, Masses or memorials to the Holy Angels School Trust Fund or the Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps and Color Guard are appreciated.
